The Power of Women event: film installation and dialogue in Rotterdam Library

17 April 2025

When we talk about women in (post-)conflict situations, their victimhood is often emphasized. But women are more than victims. They are activists, fighters for justice and bridge builders.

The film installation ‘The Power of Women’ highlights this resilience and courage through two powerful groups: the Mothers of Srebrenica and the Women in Black. For almost thirty years, they have been tirelessly committed to recognition, justice and connection in the aftermath of the genocide in Srebrenica. The film installation will be shown on May 3d 2025 in Rotterdam Central Library, followed by a dialogue with the audience.

I fathomed this film installation together with Božica Simeunović in 2024 as part of the side program of the local commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide in Rotterdam. This emotional installation was a big succes and programmers from the Rotterdam Central Library invited us to repeat it in 2025, a year that is thematically devoted to the women of Rotterdam.

The installation includes the short fiction film Mother (15 min) – a moving tribute to Srebrenica mother Hajrija Ćatić, who was never able to bury her son. We also show a compelling performance by the Serbian peace activist group Women in Black, created in collaboration with Dah Teatar to commemorate 20 years of Srebrenica.

Afterwards, we will have a discussion with the audiense led by Karin Oppelland (former director of the Netherlands in Dialogue). What we can learn from these women. And how can we use power in our own environment to create connection and peace?

Entrance is free, but places are limited. You can reserve your spot here.
