(Inn) a State of Siege

‘(Inn) a State of Siege’ tells the extraordinary story of the employees of the famous Holiday Inn hotel in Sarajevo who stayed working at the hotel during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina that lasted from 1992 to 1995. The battered hotel remained open and became a base for foreign journalists reporting on the siege and the war. It was located on one of the most dangerous and infamous streets in the city that at the time were lined with Bosnian Serb sniper posts, commonly known as ‘Sniper Alley’. Chef Mustafa, waiter Faruk and driver Ismet kept the hotel running at the risk of their own lives. But how do you run a hotel in such conditions? And how has this experience impacted them, their sons and the next generations of Bosnians?

The filming took place in April and May of 2024 in Sarajevo. The project is currently in post production.

(Inn) a State of Siege is supported by ‘Fonds voor Bijzondere Journalistieke Projecten’ (Dutch Fund for Special Journalistic Projects), the municipality of Rotterdam (Gemeente Rotterdam), Amarte Fonds and VFonds.
